What an odd thing: the Christian music business…
Many people are disgusted with the state of Christian music, claiming that it’s been watered down by trying to appeal to the masses rather than focus on the purpose. In some respects, this is true. Others are fed up with Christian music because of the fact that it has become a big money maker for many artists.
I have a problem with the last statement. It is true that many people are making a living as Christian musicians. But what is wrong with that? It is not wrong to have things.
It’s not wrong to make a lot of money; there are Christian lawyers, doctors, and business owners that do that every year. The problem comes when people begin to horde those possessions and fall in love with it. Our Christian community has somehow equated poverty with humility and righteousness. That’s not necessarily the case. I know of Christians who make a ton of money, and in the same respect give more to charity than they keep for themselves.
Is it a fact that many Christian musicians have lost focus and won’t play unless they are paid well? Yes, that is a fact. Does it mean that ALL Christian musicians hold that attitude? No. In fact, I’d say most typify the humble servant rather than the self-righteous deceiver that slaps the name “Christian” on the front of their music just to make a buck.
Something else to consider: If a Christian band has chosen to make a living from their music ministry, they must draw a much larger price than people realize in order to succeed. For instance, if a band of 4 plays for only $500 per show and makes $500 in merch sales at EVERY show (which is unheard of), each member would only make $250 per show. And that’s before travel expenses, food, and merchandise costs. It would take 160 shows per year for each band member to make $40,000 a year. That’s before taxes and expenses. I don’t think that anyone would consider that to be an extravagant living in America. It’s definitely sufficient, but not over the top, methinks.
